Malenadu Backpacking Trip

Places we are visiting:


  • Varanga lake jain temple.

  • Kavaledurga fort.

  • Nagara fort.

  • Kavi Mane, Kuppalli

  • Kudlu Theertha Falls.

Itinerary:



DAY 0:


  • Depart from Bengaluru by 10PM. 

  • Overnight journey along with music and cool breeze. 


DAY 1 :

  • Reach the homestay and freshen up. ( MALGUDI HOMESTAY, Agumbe) 

  • Have breakfast and head towards Day 1 destinations. 

  • Drive to Kavi mane, Kuppali. 

  • Walk towards Kavishaila. 

  • Lunch stop ( self sponsored) 

  • Head towards Kavaledurga fort.

  • Hike to the top of the fort (5KM total) 

  • Head towards Shivappa Nayaka fort. 

  • If time permits, one more place will be added. 

  • Reach back to homestay and have snacks with music and dance. 

  • Dinner at homestay and sleep.



Day 2:


  • Wake-up early morning and freshen up. 

  • Break fast at homestay. 

  • Checkout from homestay towards a refreshing day.

  • Head towards Varanga Jain temple. 

  • Reach the temple by boatride. 

  • Lunch stop (self-sponsored) 

  • Head towards Kudlu theerta falls. 

  • Hike to the waterfalls and spend some time in the fresh water. 

  • If Kudlu theerta is closed, then SIRIMANE falls will be alternate plan. 

  • Head towards Sringeri temple. 

  • Dinner stop (self-sponsored) 

  • Return back to Bengaluru with pocketful memories.

Inclusions and Exclusions:


Inclusions:
  • Entire travel by Tempo Traveller/Mini bus. 

  • 3 meals— 2 Breakfast & 1 Dinner. 

  • Trip leader throughout the trip. 

  • Entry tickets for Heritage sites are included.

  • Local Transportation for sightseeing

  • Accommodation on sharing basis.


Exlusions:
  • Travel, Accidental, and Medical Insurance. 

  • Cost arises due to uncontrollable circumstances like bad weather conditions, landslides, or some public protest. 

  • Water sports or any activity other than mentioned in the Itinerary. 

  • Food - which are mentioned as self sponsored. 

  • Anything not mentioned under “inclusions”

  • Soft copy of your Aadhar/Voter ID ( Mandatorily required for permits) 

  • Small backpack to carry your essentials during the trek. 

  • Water bottles - 2 ( 1L each ) 

  • Lunch box and spoon to carry your packed lunch.

  • Rain coat / Bag covers in case ofrains.

  • A comfortable pair of shoes with good grip fortrekking Flip flops for lazing around the campsite. 

  • Torch / Head lamp to be used at night. 

  • Power bank. 

  • Extra pair of clothes to change into once wet 

  • Polybags to pack your wet clothes. 

  • Extra cash for meals not included in the itinerary. 

  • Shampoo / dettol antiseptic liquid / Sneezing ( Nashe ) powderto stay safe fromleeches.

Information about the Place:



Varanga Lake Jain Temple


  • Kere Basadi (meaning: Lake temple) or Chaturmukha Basadi is a Jain temple located in Varanga village in Udupi district of Karnataka. 

  • This 12th-century temple is situated amidst of a lake giving it the name Kere Basadi (lake temple). 

  • The temple is also known Chaturmukha Basadi as it houses a chaturmukha (four-faced) idol of tirthankaras.

  •  The temple can be reached by boat ride only.


Kavaledurga Fort


  • Kavaledurga is a fort resting on the top of a hill amidst a dense forest and it requires a trek of at least 5 km to reach the summit.

  •  A spectacular combination of history and natural beauty, several shrines are housed in the fort. 

  • Kavaledurga Fort has 3 rounds of rock wall fortifications and was a stronghold of the Keladi Nayakas (an important ruling dynasty of Karnataka and the subordinates of Vijayanagara empire) during the 16th century. 

  • A freshwater pond on top of the fort is in excellent condition.

  •  One can visit the Srikanteshwara temple and Nandi Mantapa that are situated on the hill. 

  • Hiking till the top of Kavaledurga Fort will be a great exercise. 

  • On clear days offers amazing views of beautiful Sahyadri hills.


Nagara Fort:


  • Nagara is a village of historic importance, in Shivamogga district, popularforits fort built byShivappa Nayaka of Keladi Kingdom.

  •  Veerabhadra Nayaka of Keladi dynasty built Nagara fort in 1640, after Ikkeri, Keladi’s original capital was lost to Sultans of Bijapur.

  • Shivappa Nayaka succeeded Veerabhadra Nayaka and is credited with taking the Keladi Dynasty to its peak and improving the fort. 

  • Raja Ram, son of Shivaji of Maratha is said to have taken asylum in Nagara Fort. 

  • Brave rulers of Keladi such as Shivappa Nayaka and Rani Keladi Chennama successfully defended theirland against much powerful enemies. 

  • The fort laterfell to Haider Ali in 1763.


Kavi Mane, Kuppalli:


  • It is the birthplace of Kuvempu who is regarded as the greatest Kannada poet of thetwentieth century. 

  • Awarded the Jnanapitha Award in the year 1967, Kuvempu has authored many literary classics. 

  • Kuppalli is home to Kuvempu’s house which has been converted to a museum and contains a host of memorabilia associated with his life and work. 

  • Kavishaila is a rock monument made of megalithic rocks and dedicated to Kuvempu. 

  • It is on the top of a small hill in Kuppali. Arranged in a circular fashion, the rocks have been placed to resemble the Stonehenge in England. 

  • At the centre of this rock monument is the place where Kuvempu was laid to rest after his death and a memorial has been constructed at that location.


Kudlu Theertha Falls:


  • Kudlu Teertha Falls is a picturesque waterfall located in deep jungles of Western Ghats near Hebri. 

  • This waterfall is also known as Sita Falls ( formed by Sita river). 

  • The water at these falls drop from a height of 150 feet into a big pool. This is a beautiful waterfall and it's possible to swim in the pool below the falls.

  •  One can get close to the bottom of the falls when water is not forceful. 

  • There is one more waterfall above Kudlu Theertha called as Manga Theertha. There is no direct access to this fall.
